The skies over Latin America’s largest metropolis are set to witness a futuristic aerospace revolution after the Brazilian price range airline Gol struck a deal that would see it ferry commuters round São Paulo in lots of of low-cost zero-emission electrical air taxis.

“It’s going to be an absolute disrupter. We’re going to democratise air journey,” Dómhnal Slattery, chief government of the group that may present the plane to Gol, claimed in an interview with the Monetary Instances.

Slattery, from the Dublin-based agency Avolon, which lately positioned an order for 500 of the plane from their British producer, admitted helicopters have been the “area of the extremely rich”. Nowhere is that extra true than in Brazil’s financial capital the place South America’s super-rich have lengthy used them to hop between luxurious seaside properties, ranches and closely guarded compounds.

However the Avolon boss claimed the introduction of VA-X4 eVTOLs (electrical vertical takeoff and touchdown) plane to São Paulo can be a gamechanger for commuters as soon as the taxis, which appear to be a futuristic cross between a helicopter and a glider, have been delivered in late 2024 or 2025.

“Our fundamental estimate for the time being is that the working price right here for this plane would be the equal of $1 per passenger over a 25-mile journey,” Slattery advised the FT. “We predict we will get the price of this all the way down to the equal of an Uber experience, equal to downtown Manhattan to JFK.”

Few cities are crying out for such a revolution greater than São Paulo, a sprawling, car-choked metropolis with greater than 12 million inhabitants and a fleet of 8.6m automobiles.

Within the late Nineteen Nineties, the congestion grew to become so dangerous in what’s now the world’s fifth greatest metropolis after Tokyo, Delhi, Seoul and Shanghai that authorities have been pressured to introduce a quantity plate rotation system for automobiles.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, the pinnacle of the British aerospace producer which produces the plane, Vertical Aerospace, mentioned the flying taxis can be perfect for Brazil’s greatest metropolis and “rework how we journey round excessive inhabitants density cities which can be clogged with site visitors”.

“We’ll be seeking to Asia after São Paulo,” Avolon’s chief business officer, Paul Geaney, advised Reuters.

The Bristol-based Vertical Aerospace was based in 2016 and guarantees to pioneer “a brand new period in vertical transport”.

“In closely populated areas, neither automobiles nor public transport can address demand. The VA-X4 will rework the way in which individuals journey,” its web site claims.
