🇧🇷 PARAISÓPOLIS, SÃO PAULO | I entered a FAVELA alone and THIS happened! | Brazil Travel 2022
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

PARAISÓPOLIS, SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – Part 3 of my 2022 Brazil Travel series comes from Paraisópolis, one of Brazil’s largest favelas with a population estimated to be between 80-100k, located in São Paulo, Brazil’s MEGACITY!

Yes, you read the title correctly – foreigner goes to a favela alone and this is what happened! Note that I do NOT advise visiting a favela solo. It is best to visit a favela on an organised tour OR with a local who can show you around. These areas are somewhat if not totally neglected by local governments, therefore they are generally run by cartels or other organisations, meaning as a foreigner, you may be in danger. Is Brazil dangerous? Is Brazil safe? We should ask these questions and remember our risk tolerances are different. I have been filming in places like this for years, you may not feel as comfortable as me.

The intention of this video was to quash misconceptions of favelas or slums (or less affluent areas – the word favela or slum can come across as derogatory) and to highlight a real POSITIVE going on right now. Brasil Favela Xpress is a company set up by Giva Pereira, a delivery service set up during the Covid-19 pandemic to allow access to deliveries and to create employment opportunities for locals. A FANTASTIC initiative! We also have some AMAZING Brazilian food, Pastel de Queijo!

🇬🇧 I hope you understood that this video is not about a white westerner going to a favela for SHOCK value and 'likes' (what is this, 2017? Plus I'm almost 40 for f**ks sake) and that this is actually about letting the world know about a fantastic initiative set up to benefit those living in less-affluent areas of Brazil. *To reiterate, DO NOT go to a favela by yourself – do a tour or go with a local*. Remember that I have been filming videos in places like this for years and I know how to behave in these situations. If you wanna be a d**k in the comments, feel free. I would be more than happy to set up a Skype call to discuss your concerns if you have the balls to speak to someone in person instead of from your keyboard. Best Regards.

Remember you can use the TIMESTAMPS to jump to certain parts of the video before you start complaining about someone talking on camera, what do you want me to do, use morse f**king code? If you get my humour, well done LOL

The vast majority of people who live in the favelas, I would say 99%, are hardworking, honest, great people, who have a very difficult life, society and the government do not give them many opportunities, and yet they do so much, they are true warriors. , very creative and incredibly hardworking, imagine if they had more opportunities. It's the people, simple and amazing people like these, kind and happy, that make Brazil so well seen by foreigners, that we are such a receptive people. It is sad that we have so much inequality, our people deserve to have the best, but as in most parts of the world, few have much, and many have so little.
I liked the video, the way it showed the local initiatives, it wasn't just to be another one showing a favela "as a tourist show", it's people's lives, and it's important for people to know that there are a lot of people there doing a lot of cool things for the development of the community, acting where the state is absent, acting where society closes its eyes not to see and pretending that there is not so much inequality, and they still think they have the right to judge.
Sorry if i wrote something wrong, i'm writing with some help from the translator.

Fantastic video, David. Thanks for taking us into that favela and showing what it is really like. What a wonderful project the 'kind' bike lads put you in contact with. Preconceptions are annoying. I grew up in a 'bad' area in Edinburgh and the dirty looks I and my friends used to get whenever we said where we werr from, uh! All of us tarred with the same brush.

Tell me more about these Favela tours, do you get to feed them or just look at them in their cages??? Why any human would want to go on a Favela, slum, garbage dump tour to see other humans living in poverty or misery is just beyond my comprehension. Do you seriously sit in your home planning your summer vacation and top of the list visiting the slums of Manila, Jakarta or India and to the people that have done so and commented "they are just normal people" WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? That they would be like? two headed monkeys dancing for you in a zoo? Get a f…ing grip!!!
And just on all the poverty and food handouts in these favelas they should be handing out meals on Gold plates for all the money questionable charities have raised, duly noted US$10 MILLION was fund raised just for feeding people in these favelas during the pandemic alone, the billions of dollars put into projects, housing, infrastructure these monkeys should be dancing for tourists in gilded cages!!! This is not slagging off at you David, this is for the hundreds of thousands of "sexy you Tubers" that go there on tours to upload for Insta and YT likes, just type "Visiting Favelas in Brazil" on YT and tell me you don't get close to 1million hits for videos filmed there. There lve had my say, where's all the 💰 do gooders have raised🤷‍♀️

Amazing video! As a Brazilian, I was surprised to see the projects that are under way in Paraisópolis. I know for a fact that many of those rich people that live around Paraisopólis also contribute a lot to improve the lives of those living in the community.

When I was little I attended the school, Escola Graduada, on the other side of the avenue. Paraisópolis was much smaller then and I always wondered what life was like there, as we were told not to go in and there was not much opportunity to do so as we were bused to school from another part of SP. I'm glad you had the opportunity to do this and discovered, as I did during the time I lived in Brazil, that the locals are mostly friendly and helpful. Plus the food, even the street food, is out-of-this-world good everywhere you go

I'm from the UK and I met my future wife in the favela and never felt like a foreigner or intruder. The simple rule is here and there always the same principle: play by the rules and you will have an amazing experience. you don't wear shiny new clothes, you keep your phone always safe and speaking to locals is the way to learn those unwritten rules. The police you hardly find in the favela, those people have their own "police" Some call it the mafia others call it the favela's own law of engagement, or the people's protection Don't believe those horrible BBC or Sky News reports of crime, weapon and street fights. In the favela every weekend the people celebrate the weekend from Friday to Monday morning. Yes, I saw the police as well, helping the local mafia boss to recover a stolen motorbike. They don't come unprepared, guns and machine guns are always to use if necessary. Yes, I saw people carrying their own weapon of choice to defend their business. Whatever your personal choice of drug you will find it in the favelas. The noise over the weekends is undescribably loud, forget sleeping or peace. Everyone plays his own choice of music, people drink a lot and just celebrate the work-free days. Even a massive supermarket exists and is open 7 days a week Over the years the favelas have not really larger, but their houses come higher and higher in added levels room by room built on top of the room underneath. Some are very impressive from people who obviously run a good business. From Hairdressers to any shop you can think about you find in the favella. Brazilians know how to party and I always felt welcomed never received rude behaviour or rude words, the Brazilians are the most polite people I ever met. They may look dangerous but this is the culture of expressing yourself the way you want to be recognised. We live as well in a very modern apartment in the centre of Sao Paulo. For me an escape for more quiet tours and a more peaceful life. I always say Brazil is a different world because it's so hard to describe the differences from our Western world societies. Here its don't matter what you know or what you do, it's more like who you know. The food and the choices of food are unbelievable, even if food is the most expensive item to buy. In time you learn which areas to enter with caution but since 2019 till now I never been a victim of crime. There is so much more to say but if anyone like some more info just leave me a comment and I respond asap.
