Amber Heard returned to the stand on Monday to wrap up her testimony followed by a cross-examination by Johnny Depp’s legal team as the actor’s defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife continues.
Depp is accusing the actress of ruining his reputation and career with false accusations of domestic violence.
Under questioning by her attorneys, Heard said she took the step after the “Pirates of the Caribbean” star threw a cellphone that hit her in the face. The incident made her realize the marriage was “falling apart” despite her attempts to repair it, she said.
“I knew I had to leave him,” she said. “I knew I wouldn’t survive it if I didn’t.”
Jurors were shown photos of Heard with redness and swelling on her face that she said was caused by being struck by the phone.
In the legal battle between the two stars, both Heard, 36, and Depp, 58, claim to be victims of violence. The initial court case began when Depp filed a $50-million defamation lawsuit over a Washington Post op-ed penned by Heard in late 2018 about domestic abuse.
Heard did not mention Depp by name in the article, but the actor alleges his reputation and career were “devastated” as a result.
