The 2014 World Cup produced a semi-final that nobody will ever forget. “The night Germany removed the crown from football royalty”, The Athletic’s Daniel Taylor wrote in his match report describing the way Germany scored 7 goals past Brazil.
It was the game that reduced an entire country to tears, as described by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

I lived in Brazil during the 2006 World Cup in Germany, played football with Brazilians every day, and had to listen to so much trash talk about German football (had absolutely nothing to do with me, obviously) and the far superior Brazilian jogo bonito. This game was one of the happiest days of my life, and I still watch the highlights if I have a bad day
Explaining the significance of this game to someone who doesn’t follow the sport is impossible. It was legitimately shocking to watch. Not only did the worlds most celebrated and successful team get blown out but they managed to do it in the World Cup semifinals on home soil. Brazil still hasn’t recovered from the loss all these years later.
Lolol
As an Argentinean… I just cried watching this video. Don't get me wrong, I've sung songs mocking Brazil for this performance. But also, I know that Brazil feels the shirt as much as us, and it's incomprehensible for me to understand the pain that so many millions of people must've felt that day.
Crazy how the loss of Neymar demoralized this team
Here in Germany, for reasons that i do not think i have to explain to anyone, football is the only context in which it is generally socially acceptable to be patriotic (tho i think i have found for myself a different form of patriotism that works but this is beyond the scope of this comment).
Now as a German: It is a tradition for me to every now and then and certainly on the anniversary of this evwnt, to watch the highlights and feel patriotic. This game will no doubt forever live in infamy in brazillian football lore but it will also forever be one of the proufest moments in German footballing history. A truly magical game that for me is only really beaten by the miracle of Bern.
Anyway guys, watch out at the 2026 world cup because Germany is back! Nations league is looking a bit grim with so.mamy star players injured but at the World Cup 2026 and especially if we shall be relatively lucky in terms of injuries, i am sure we will not fail in the group stage this time 😅. I think the title is certainly an ambitious goal but one that is not as entirely unrealistic to have as it would have been 4 years ago. It is a few years tho before another title is statistically due tho
Somehow, that 1 goal Brazil got at the very end makes it even more humiliating.
The greatest scene at the world cup was the woman with the glasses and brazil hat crying hysterically and the kid crying into his coke.
3:50 it is urban legend that Schürrle wasn’t there when they Löw urged the Germans not to humiliate the Brazilians and that was why he shot another two goals
The 4th and 5th goal were so quick we actually thought it was a replay 😂😂
What a loser mentality this country has. something like a sports game could influence you so much
Ever since this game, Brazil has not been the same.
Problem of Brazil: victimhood culture and defining yourself by your defeats. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy
Germany has brutally humiliated not only Brazil but also several other top nations in competitive matches over the past 15 years. No other nation has achieved this level of brutality in competitive matches. Its "easy" to do this with smaller nations but its crazy to do this again and again with other big football nations:
World cup 2010: Round last 16 Germany vs England 4-1
World cup 2010: Quarterfinal Germany vs Argentina 4-0
World cup 2014: Group game Germany vs Portugal 4-0
World cup 2014: Semifinal Germany vs Brazil 7-1 (7-0 ahead after 79 minutes)
Nations League 2022: Germany vs Italy 5-2 (5-0 ahead after 69 minutes)
who was brazil coach must be a 🤡
The 2014 Brazil team was stacked with talent, and that loss to Germany wasn’t just painful because of the scoreline, but also because of how much emotion was tied to it—being on home soil, with the whole country watching. That match felt like a betrayal of everything they had worked for. Many people do believe that squad was the best, and they certainly deserved better than what happened in that semifinal.
The way Germany fell in 2018 and 2022, especially with early exits, probably gave Brazil fans a sense of vindication. It's kind of like football karma. While Brazil couldn’t beat them on the field, seeing Germany struggle in those tournaments is a small consolation.
But as you said, football is cyclical. Brazil’s always got the talent, and the hunger to bounce back stronger is clear. With the talent coming through, there’s definitely hope for the future. Who do you think could step up and be the next big star for Brazil? Maybe someone from the current crop, or someone you’ve got your eye on for the next few years?
Every day is a 7×1 in my life
Não foi apenas um simples 7 a 1, mas 7 recordes mundiais no mesmo jogo:
1. Maior goleada em uma semifinal de Copa do Mundo
2. Pior derrota de um país-sede em Copas do Mundo
3. Derrota mais acentuada do Brasil desde 1920
– we was dancing Samba in Rio and you did not want samba dancing the first time. Thank us later, when you understood.
If you feel better you lost a World Cup but we Lost two World Wars, so easy peasy baby 🙂
Humildade diante de si mesmo.
Today marks the 11th year of this shocking result😂
The most wonderful match I have ever witnessed! ❤🎉🇩🇪
Greetings from Stuttgart
i remember watching this game live, and after the second goal it felt absolutely surreal. i know exactly where i was when 9/11 happened, and i know exactly where i was when this happened.
Italy has Vittorio Veneto, Germany has Versailles, Austria has Triannon, Brazil has 7-1, a national shock and horror so deep it resounds for generations.
American Football fan here, this is futbol’s 28-3. If you mention 28-3 to any American, they know exactly what you are talking about.
