An incident at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) on Tuesday afternoon grounded some flights and closed the airspace temporarily.
Richmond RCMP said they initially received a report at 1:10 p.m. that a Cessna 172, a small passenger aircraft, had been hijacked from the Greater Victoria area, across the Salish Sea, and entered into airspace near YVR. The suspect was the lone occupant on board.
Global’s Jordan Armstrong and Richard Zussman have the latest.

Crazy Washington is a depressing place where people do stupid things to get attention… God help the western Washington residents move to a better place any place other than western Washington and western Oregon….
They should give him a job 😊
I'm SHOCKED and horrified that the military did not respond faster.
He could have just made a sign to protest. His plan was to fly around and melt another ice cap..lol
Schute!
No name? Gee I wonder why…
you can only hijack anything if there are ppl on board. this was stolen.. Goes to show how stupid and misleading all media is
So scary glad everyone was ok
In a few years he will be the Liberal minister of environment
You see normally in another country the Air Force would intercept and force a plane to land, not in Canada since our Air Force is handling relics and zero pilots!
That is not "hijacked" .He stole a plane. You all wrong!
WHO IS IT, WHAT IS THEIR NAME?
This is so damn embarrassing. Again Canada cannot get its own planes up in the air in time and so the US has to send F15s from further away. It is such an utter joke what our military has become. All we do is buy and transport planes and ships and have no way to possibly defend our own nation against any aggressor.
Global news doesn't know the act of stealing and a highjack, is far different…
Me and my family will be flying into Vancouver on Friday, gee we could have been diverted. Sorry to all that were, and hope you are all safe and sound at home.. I hope they throw the book at this guy, this could have been a disaster.
These “Canadian” news reporters don’t even know the difference between a “stolen” and “hijacked” plane.
🤦🏻♂️ what a bunch of illiterate 🤡
Oh Canada never learns
Hahaha he is craze. He think hijack a small plane gonna change the world. In the meantime, all the celebrities are flying private jets everywhere while he is in jail.
Omg
I bet his name isnt John Smith… 😂
Since when was a STOLEN plane a hijacking? 🤔
This country is an embarrassment 😂
Carney didn't make an announcement so he doesnt care.
There’s a purpose for everything. It’s a response test for future actions
Nice case of integration 🤣🤣🤣
Considering all the terrible things Canada is saying about us we really shouldn’t be sending our jets to help you out
It is a national embarrassment for Canada that it's few fighter jets are only in Cold Lake, Alberta and Bagotville, Quebec. Canadian CF-18's would have had to fly 1,700 km to respond from Cold Lake, and would have been low on fuel by the time they got to YVR. Comox Air Base does not have fighters stationed there. The closest NORAD Air Force assets are in McChord Air Force base near Tacoma and Portland Air National Guard base. Both have F-15's on standby. That is where the American planes would come from. Whidbey Island, Washington is a U.S. naval air station, but does not partake in the NORAD first response mission. It has F-18 and F-35 fighters.
wait we pay so much in taxes and they have no way to guard our airspace? that’s disgusting
Taxpayer funded propaganda
Trump saves Canada again
The most fun part of this event is that US fighter jets are being deployed, and Canadians are in preparation at the same time!? What a joke and shame!
Can't defend itself yet throwing little resources it has to Ukrainian conflict. Shame on Canadian politicians
According to “flight aware” (no paid promotion banner) and no love for @flightradar24
So it wasn't a hijacking at all,
just an undirected mental health day for a loner in a tiny plane, with a message about climate change.
Not the threat that the term "hijacking" usually stirs up.
WOW…😮😮😮!!
Of course the NORAD jets would have come from the US. Disgrace Canada couldn’t have handled this. That plane would have been “escorted” out of the airspace very quickly if this happened in the US.
US fighter jets responded because the Canadian jets couldn't "take off, eh".
