BI and P2MI launch website to protect Indonesian migrant workers

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Bank Indonesia (BI) and the Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) signed a cooperation agreement here on Friday to enhance consumer protection for Indonesian migrant workers in the field of payment systems.

BI Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta, in a statement here on Friday, stated that remittance, or the transfer of money by migrant workers to their families, not only supports their welfare but also strengthens Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves and supports Indonesia’s balance of payments stability.

To this end, BI collaborated with the Ministry of P2MI to create the JariPMI.Info website, which provides essential information for Indonesian migrant workers.

The website includes details on destination country profiles, administrative and document requirements, culture, Indonesian communities, safe remittance services, financial education, and consumer protection.

Through the website, which is connected to BI’s complaint submission portal, migrant workers can file complaints regarding payment systems.

In addition to the website, BI is also making efforts to educate migrant workers, prospective migrant workers, and Indonesian migrant worker placement companies about the Care, Recognize, and Report principles.

These principles encourage them to care about the benefits, risks, rights, and obligations as consumers; recognize fraud schemes and the importance of protecting personal data; and report any obstacles or fraud through official channels.

“We encourage migrant workers and their families to continuously enhance their financial literacy so that remittances are not only used for consumptive needs but also become a sustainable source of welfare,” Hendarta remarked.
