Jakarta to overhaul rundown markets, push digital payments

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Jakarta will overhaul dozens of traditional markets and expand digital payment systems to lift trade and address long-standing sanitation and safety problems, Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said on Tuesday.

Pramono said only part of the city’s 153 markets have been modernized, leaving many in disrepair.

Revitalization would make the facilities cleaner, safer and more accessible, he said after meeting traders in East Jakarta.

The governor said digitalization would also be expanded after pilot projects in Santa and Mayestik markets boosted transactions by 47 percent in a recent competition among 12 markets.

He said vendors had pressed for renovations and greater digital access, adding that the city had agreed to restrict public facilities from being converted into commercial stalls by city-owned Pasar Jaya.

About 60 of the markets managed by Pasar Jaya are in poor condition and at risk of flooding or fire, according to the Jakarta Market Traders Cooperative Union. The group said roughly 40 percent of the city’s traditional markets suffer from leaking roofs, poor drainage and unhygienic environments.

Facilities in the worst condition include Sukapura, Lontar, Sindang and Rawabadak in North Jakarta; Pulogadung, Rawamangun, Ampera, Ciplak and Kampung Ambon in East Jakarta; Cempaka Putih, Paseban, Serdang and Jelambar Polri in Central Jakarta; and Blok A, Radio Dalam, Mampang Prapatan and Warung Buncit in South Jakarta.

The cooperative said Blok G and Lontar Kebon Melati in Tanah Abang were in the most critical state.

Traders say poor management and rigid cashless payment systems have discouraged business, leaving many markets underused. City officials hope upgrading facilities and expanding digital transactions will restore traditional markets as key hubs for commerce and community life.
