HORRIFYING footage shows the moment a singer was electrocuted by his own microphone on stage.

The shocking video shows Carlos Suarez, 21, staggering backwards as he introduced himself to a packed bar in Lima, Peru.

The singer fell to the floor, and was paralysed for several seconds.

Sparks flew as Suarez writhed on the floor and cried out for help.

The electric shock could have killed the 21-year-old if a quick-thinking sound technician and a member of another band had not unplugged the mic.

Panicked concert-goers can be heard in the video desperately shouting “the current, the current”.

Suarez is the lead singer of rock band Mi Major Amigo Scott (My Best Friend Scott), and was rushed to hospital after the shock.

He later confirmed that the near-death experience had left him with first-degree burns.

He said: “I went through a very traumatic situation and came close to losing my life.”

Fans feared the worst but Suarez, also known as Mono (Monkey), reassured them in an Instagram video.

Mono appeared with bandages on his neck, saying: “What happened could have had fatal consequences.

“But I am okay health wise. I have a couple of burns on my neck but no other complications thankfully.”

Footage showed Suarez’s muscles tensing up as the electric current pulsed through him, leaving the singer unable to control his body for nearly 10 seconds.

He explained on Instagram after leaving hospital: “When I plugged my guitar into the amplifier, I touched the microphone and received an electric shock that paralysed me for about seven seconds.

“All I could do was scream and fall to the floor, where I continued to be electrocuted.

“That was when the microphone fell onto my neck and caused two first-degree burns, which fortunately were superficial, which is why my neck is bandaged and I’m taking medication.

“But I’m pleased to say that apart from the burns to my neck, I am in good health, I am stable, and I have no complications in my body.

“I was conscious throughout and although I was in shock, I was able to get back up onto my feet afterwards.”

The 21-year-old announced that he would be “taking a break from live performances until further notice” while he recovers from his injuries.

Initial reports suggested that the shock was caused by a poorly installed sound system.

Suarez claimed he had nearly died because there was no ground wire and high-voltage amplifiers without the right adaptors had been used.

But he later took back the comments, saying they were incorrect, and apologising for any confusion he had created.

The singer said: “Whatever happened I want to make sure that these sort of things never occur again.

“I wouldn’t like to discover that a colleague who like me devotes himself to the independent music scene has to experience what I went through.

He said that event organisers have assured him that the safety of performers is a priority, and thanked fans for their support.

In July 2024 Brazilian rock singer Ayres Sasaki, 35, died onstage after suffering a serious electric shock.

A fan in soaking-wet clothes had hugged him during the concert, causing the freak accident.

He was survived by wife Mariana, who he had been married to for less than a year.
