People in parts of Paris and Spain tried to find ways to cool off on Wednesday as a sweltering heat wave hit various European countries, with some cities seeing temperatures of close to 45 C or higher.
Meteo France forecaster François Jobard said the heat wave in France could last at least eight to 10 days.
In Spain, some took to the beach to cool off while animals at the zoo in Madrid were given popsicles, or in some cases, “fishsicles”, to keep their temperatures normal.
The heat was also keeping wildfires going that had sparked in some countries, with more than 20 burning across Portugal and others raging in southwestern France.

Unfortunately, it's the government's problem, in this particular case. It is very easy to make maps of the territory, to have drones to police, or to have millions of water on all sides, or all kinds of strategies to fight fire. It's work, and maybe some cost in the beginning, but that's life. It is unacceptable that we have such a small country that burns every year, and that, like last year, hundreds of people die because of it… If we can't solve basic problems in a small territory, how can we solve any problem on a global scale?
