New York doctor Dr. Vassily Eliopoulos, who challenges everything you know about heart attacks, is a wrestler and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu champion

For decades, plaque buildup in arteries, known as atherosclerosis, has been seen as a permanent condition. The sticky accumulation of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances narrows arteries and increases the risk of heart attacks. But Dr. Vassily Eliopoulos says that view may be outdated.

Dr. Eliopoulos explains that many heart attacks are caused by soft plaque rupture, not just arteries blocked by calcium deposits. People can have a normal stress test and still be at high risk. Surgery or stenting can address immediate symptoms and save lives, but they do not fix the underlying disease, he believes.

About Dr. Vassily Eliopoulos

Dr. Eliopoulos earned a BS with honors in Neuroscience from Trinity College, Hartford, and an MD from Cornell University Medical College in New York City. After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Solomon Islands and completing postgraduate training in General Surgery and Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and Denver Health Medical Center, he became board-certified in Emergency Medicine. He is also a member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

According to the ModernMedLife website, Dr. Eliopoulos is a lifelong athlete and grappler. He has won high school and collegiate wrestling championships and continues to compete at national and world levels in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He also enjoys rock and ice climbing and whitewater kayaking.

What does his research say?

Dr. Vassily Eliopoulos’ research challenges the long-held belief that arterial plaque is permanent. His work suggests that plaque buildup in arteries, known as atherosclerosis, can potentially be reduced or even reversed by addressing the root causes rather than simply treating symptoms.According to Dr. Vass, many heart attacks are caused by the rupture of soft plaque, not just calcium-blocked arteries, meaning traditional tests like stress tests may not fully reveal a patient’s risk. He believes standard cholesterol readings, he says, may not reveal the complete picture. His approach emphasizes advanced testing, including APOB measurements to determine true lipid particle load, high-sensitivity CRP with LP-PLA2 to detect inflammation, and CCTA scans to identify the location and type of plaque.

Alongside testing, he advocates targeted lifestyle interventions such as a Mediterranean-style diet rich in polyphenols, omega-3s, and fiber, regular exercise, and sufficient sleep to lower cortisol and inflammation levels.

Therapeutic support, including niacin, berberine, peptides like BPC-157 and Mod-C, and IV nutrients such as glutathione and arginine, can further improve vascular health and potentially aid in plaque reversal. Dr. Vassily notes that with a focused, root-cause approach, measurable improvements in cardiovascular health can often be observed within six to twelve months, offering hope for a proactive path to preventing heart attacks.
