At more than $1,000 per day, the tarmac at Toronto Pearson International Airport has become one of the most expensive parking lots in the world. A Russian cargo plane has been racking up those fees since February, after Canada declared it could no longer fly.
Three days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Canada — like many other countries — closed its airspace to Russian aircraft. This meant that Russia’s Antonov AN-124 cargo plane was suddenly grounded.
A Ministry of Transport spokesperson said that “this measure is in effect until further notice,” leaving an indefinite timeline for the aircraft’s future.
